Here's the "Innovative" themed coin, commemorating "Honey". A design competition was held to finalize the design and industrial designer Artūrs Analts has been awarded the first prize. Overall, 42 designs were submitted.

Issue date is not fixed yet. Bank of Latvia says it will discuss with the winner regarding how to implement his idea on the coin. ;)

Here't the third coin from the "Fairy Tales" series. The subject this time is 'The Old man's Mitten'.

The coin is now a part of my collection, thanks to a very good friend from Germany. :) With this coin, I now have all the three coins from 'Fairy Tales' series. Interestingly, the first coin from the series (five cats) has become quite expensive, as it was sold out at the central bank soon after the issue. Second and third coins are relatively easy to find (and affordable too!)

Here are the two €2.5 coins commemorating Eduards Veidenbaums. From Bank of Latvia's newsletter:

According to the concept of artist Arvīds Priedīte, the set of both coins forms an image of stylised spectacles associated with Eduards Veidenbaums: we recognise him from the single authentic photo that has survived up to now. The obverse of one coin features clouds, the facsimile signature of Eduards Veidenbaums and a line of his verse "Tiem vēlētos es līdzi tālu skriet…" (I'd love to follow them far away...). The obverse of the other coin depicts clouds and a line "Tur tālumā, kur ziemas nepazīst" (Far away where winter never comes). The reverse of both coins features a horizontal trail of human footprints in the snow.

The coins were issued today with issue price of €80. Mintage: 3000.

Here's the €5 coin commemorating Latvian folk songs (Smith forges in the sky).

Obverse
A rider wearing an ethnographic outfit is featured in the centre of the coin, with his right hand raised and holding an orb shooting nine lightning bolts in various directions; there are clouds and raindrops around the horse; an inscription "KALĒJS KALA DEBESĪS, OGLES BIRA DAUGAVĀ." (Smith forges in the sky, the coals burst into the Daugava) is featured in a semi-circle below the central motif.

Reverse
The upper part of the coin features images of Latvian ethnographic jewellery and raindrops, an inscription 5 EURO and a shawl with a headpiece and jewellery on it are featured underneath, with the inscription of the year 2017 placed to the right. An inscription "ES PAKLĀJU VILLAINĪTI, MAN PIEBIRA SUDRABIŅA." (I spread my shawl on the ground and collect a pile of silver) is arranged in a semi-circle above the central motif.

Edge
The edge bears the inscriptions LATVIJAS BANKA and LATVIJAS REPUBLIKA, separated by rhombic dots.

Smith forges in the sky,
The coals burst into the Daugava;
I spread my shawl on the ground
And collect a pile of silver.

Mintage: 4000, Struck by Royal Dutch Mint. 31.47 g, 38.61 mm, Ag 925.

Hmm. I did figure out that the language used on the coin is indeed Latvian (which I do not speak) but with the older, pre-1908, spelling. What I do not quite understand is ... what is that WiFi symbol supposed to represent?

What I do not quite understand is ... what is that WiFi symbol supposed to represent?

From Bank of Latvia's e-shop:

A Wi-Fi symbol is featured in the centre, with an inscription "Long live the free and united Latvia!" arranged in two lines in a semi-circle above it. An inscription "Walka" is featured below the symbol, with the year 1917 placed below that. An inscription "5 euro" is placed in the bottom left part of the coin in a semi-circle, with the inscription of the year 2017 placed to the right.

That still doesn't quite explain use of Wi-Fi symbol. ::)
