A rather nice coin, gifted to me by a good friend on Friday at the forum meeting -
what's so special, well I guess not all that much - but for some reason in 1973 just 1000 of these were made, so they are somewhat scarce
always willing to trade modern UK coins for modern coins from elsewhere....

Fine design. :) Just looked this one up, and it seems that, while most of them (the 2 new pence with the falcons) were made by the Royal Mint in 1971, the Pobjoy Mint made the later pieces: The 1972, 1973 and 1974 pieces were all made in 1975, with that 1,000 mintage ...

Nice scarce coin that.  :) Is this a circulation issue or one from a set?

I can't quite get my head round Pobjoy minting just 1000 for those years unless they were for sets? Especially if, as you say, they were minted in 1975 with previous years' dates on.

IOM: "We're short of 2ps"
POBJOY: "Ok, we'll mint another 1000 - that should keep you out of trouble."

It doesn't make much sense to me.  :-\
