Ghaznavid, Yamun al-Daula Mahmud b. Sebuktekin, Gz03
« on: October 15, 2016, 06:00:19 PM »
Ghaznavid, Yamun al-Daula Mahmud b. Sebuktekin, bilingual AR dirham, Mahmudpur (Lahore), Album 1610(R), Mitchiner 773a, G&G GZ3.
Obverse:
Centre: Shahada. " Al-Qadir" above; "billah" to left. Yamin al-daula wa amin mahmud al-milla (..Mahmud guardian of the faith) below
Margins: bismillah zuriba haza ed-dirhem Mahmudpur fi sanat (date)
Reverse:
The Sanskrit text in Sarada characters reads (extracted as per Zeno #39207):
avyaktameka muhammada avatar nrpati mahamuda (The Invisible is One; Muhammad is the manifestation; Mahmud the king). The circular margin reads: Ayam tankam mahamudapura ghatita ta jikiyera samvati...(This tanka struck at Mahmudpur in the Arabic year ...).
Thanks,
Saikat

Thanks for showing this one, nice find !
I always have been intrigued by these bilingual dirhems. Unfortunately they were only a short experiment.
Looking at this one i thought i'd compare it with the ones that were shown previously on WoC. Just to find out that i had not put these in the index. I corrected this ommission. Previous examples were shown here.

I agree with your attribution as GZ3, but not with your reading. What you give as the reverse edge text in Sanskrit in Sharada script is actually that of type GZ4. Starting reading anti-clockwise just before 6-o'clock on your specimen it clearly reads "AYam TanKam HaTo MaHa.." And indeed the edge text of GZ3 is supposed to read "avyaktiya name ayam tankam hato mahamuda samvati 418".

I agree with TH. The bi-lingual aspect is fascinating and exempary.
