UK commemorative themes for 2017
« on: October 14, 2016, 04:16:28 PM »
In 2017 the Royal Mint is going to issue the next bullion coin in the popular series 'The Queen's Beasts'. The coin, which will be issued in several alloys and with several denominations, will depict the Griffin of Edward III accompanied by a shield depicting the Royal Arms.

Furthermore a bullion coin in several alloys and with several denominations will be issued to commemorate the Lunar Year of the Rooster. The coin was designed by Wuon-Gean Ho.

Not sure what those arms are, but they are neither the arms of Edward III, nor those of Elizabeth II.

That is the badge of the House of Windsor.

Theme of a 50 pence coin that will be issued in 2017:

- Isaac Newton: The coin will feature interpretations of elements from Proposition 11 from Book One of Principia Mathematica.

In 2017, the Royal Mint is going to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the inauguration of Queen Elizabeth II on several (expensive)collectors coins, the most 'average' one being a 5 pounds coin that will depict the Imperial State Crown. It will be issued in copper-nickel, silver and gold.

Below a design can be seen that was made by the French artist Amélie Valverde that she made during her internship at design studio BisonBison in London (where earlier the Jigsaw series and several commemoratives were designed). The Royal Mint held a design competition for the Jane Austen 2 pounds coin in which invited designers and design studios could submit designs. Despite several attempts, I was unable to get in touch with Ms Valverde to ask for further information. It is unknown if this is the winning design.

A really good way to go beyond the portrait and into the significance of the author.

:o I really hope they fix the spelling error before minting millions of them, if it's to be this design!

I presume "Gorgina Darcy" is meant to be Georgiana Darcy, sister of Fitzwilliam Darcy in Pride and Prejudice.

5 Pounds: 100th anniversary of the House of Windsor: The coin features the badge of the House of Windsor.

5 Pounds: 1000th anniversary of the coronation of King Canute: The coin features a contour portrait of King Canute.

I don't like the designs of the Jane Austen and Isaac Newton coins. While I do think Isaac Newton and his work are important enough to be featured on a coin, this piece doesn't commemorate any important anniversary in particular so there should not be such coin in 2017. Anyway the designs are still under embargo until tomorrow 8:30 AM so it is a nice prime for WoC.

Thanks for the news eurocoin.

The design depicted on 50p coin would be better in the Ł2 coins I think.

Happy new year to everyone :)

Book 1 of Newton's Principia was published in 1687. Yes, a 330th anniversary is a strange one to choose for a coin. I dislike the computer graphics look of these designs, though it suits the Newtonian theme. But that's the way modern design is going, I think, and I blame Matthew Dent for that. It actually looks more Continental than British. And the First world war again - you'd think Britain was a militaristic country, or something.   :o  Strange, then, that we didn't celebrate the very nasty Boer war during its centenary. Anyway, there are no fictional animals on the 50p for 2017. At times, the Royal Mint website nearly collapsed under the weight of demand for those animals. How ever will the sheeple cope in 2017?   ;D
