I like to collect the small Canadian silver 5c pieces.  I do not buy on Ebay; I just acquire what I can from UK dealers, and now have over half of the series.

The first coin is scarce: 1875H has a theoretical mintage of 1,000,000, but most coins struck that year were in fact dated 1874, so it is as scarce as 1884 with 200,000 on record.  My version has the more common small date.

1880 has a much larger H, and has a huge mintage of 3 million.  This is one of my better specimens as far as condition goes.

The 1915 coin is the key George V date, discounting the 1921 coin, with a mintage of 1,172,258.  This is one coin that I did buy in Canada, from a French-speaking dealer in Sherbrooke who was disappointed that I did not choose one of his slabbed coins. It was the first coin in my 5c collection.

When I read that sort of thing, I am always grateful for being a type collector. :) You can see here what a breakthrough the reduction lathe must have been. These are thumbnail sized coins, yet all the detail of the larger coins is there. Nice collection.

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

Tony,
I do have some of these coins. The 1858 5c. coin is very difficult to find.

As for key dates in the King George V silver 5c. coin series, the 1911 is both a key date & a key type coin - the 1911 coins from the 1c. right up to the 50c. are known as the 'Godless' coinage.Yes,I do have a 1911 5c. coin.

Aidan.
