Does the New Hebrides 1982 two francs exist?
« on: July 07, 2009, 04:08:33 PM »
So far,I have for the New Hebrides 1982 (a) 1 Franc & 5 Francs in my collection.

Has anyone ever seen an example of the 1982 (a) 2 Francs?

I have been searching for a number of years for an example of this coin without success.

Does anyone know if this coin even exists?

I have posted this question up in the Coin Question Yahoo! Group, but no-one has answered my question on there so far.

Aidan.

I don't collect coins from the New Hebrides or Vanuatu myself, but according to the catalog I have, a 2 francs coin was indeed issued in 1982. No mintage figures for the circulation version though ...

It is not listed in the 2009 edition, but neither is the 5 francs 1982. My copy is dated 1973.

since the vatu was introduced already in 1981 it is unlikely that in the following year there was again a franc denomination issued.
it cannot be totally excluded, however, as the franc was demonetised only in mid 1983, when the vatu was put into circulation.

Lecompte catalogue (2007) does not mention anything, but Schön catalogue (2009) does list the entire series for that year.
I don't have any coins later than 1979, the last year according to Lecompte.

I have just the 5 Francs for 1982.

This page...

http://ultramarines.info/

has a New Hebrides page (all in French) and it indicates that the 2 Francs 1982 does exist.

The page reads as though the writer (who I have been in touch with in the past - and he is quite good on his subject) has verified the existence of the 2 Francs 1982 with other collector(s). Where as such the 10 Francs of 1982 and 20 Francs of 1982 are listed as though he remains unsure as to there existence.

Thanks Mr Paul Baker

His note: Les monnaies datées 1982 n'ont pas été mises en circulation; une poignée seulement connue dans le monde le reste a été refondu means coins dated 1982 were not put in circulation; only a handful are known and the rest was melted down. In his penultimate table, headed manquant (missing in his collection), the entry behind the 2 francs 1982 is existe (exists). In the last table, headed ces monnaies de 1982 n'ont pas été mises en circulation, et jamais vues à ma connaissance or these 1982 coins were not put into circulation and have never been seen as far as I know, he lists four coins whose existence he finds doubtful. Note the Gadoury, Schön and KM numbers for the position of the cataloguers.

Harald,
The 1981 50 & 10,000 Vatu are actually commemorative medal-coins.I have the cupro-nickel Unc. 50 Vatu, which never turns up,as it is the silver Proof one that always turns up.

According to Krause, the 1982 issue is actually an emergency coinage. The 5 Francs was the highest denomination struck in 1982.I'd be very surprised if 10 & 20 Francs coins dated 1982 exist.

As for the mintage figures for the coins of the New Hebrides, they are actually quite low.

Although the New Hebridean coins were issued by the Franch,as the British allowed Australian currency to circulate there, they do belong in a British Commonwealth coin collection, which is why I collect them.

As for the Essais (pattern coins),I have the 1967 (a) 10 & 20 Francs,& the 1966 (a) silver 100 Francs.

the 500 francs 1979 is a medal.
the 1981 issues are ordinary commems, the 50 vatu 1981 has the same dimensions as the later circulation issues and as the 50 francs. they occasionally come up in circulated condition. the 10'000 vatu is noteworthy because of its high nominal value (1'818 FRF), it must have taken ages for the average Vanuatuan to earn that much.  ;D

Harald,
The New Hebridean 1979 500 Francs is listed as an unadopted pattern coin.

As for the 1981 50 Vatu,I don't agree with you there,as the New Hebridean Franc still remained in circulation until 1983,when they were withdrawn & replaced by the 1983 1 to 50 Vatu normal circulation coinage.

The 1981 50 Vatu is like the 1966B silver 50 Cents from Botswana - intended for issue as a medal-coin.In the case of the Botswanan 50c.,there is evidence that it actually circulated, despite being a silver coin.

the vatu as a currency unit was introduced in January 1981, so the independence commemoratives were perfectly legal.

it is not uncommon that in a transition period you have the old and new currencies running in parallel. the vatu banknotes
were introduced in 1981/82 the circulation coins were following in 1983.
