Early comment, you can delete this if you wish, Niels: GOD ZIJ MET ONS is an archaic subjunctive use of the verb zijn. Therefore, the motto should be translated as "may god be with us". In indicative mood, the motto would be GOD IS MET ONS (God is with us.)

Don't worry, the statue is alive and well. It is seen here (peg-leg and all) in the WIC headquarters in Amsterdam, waging an anti-smoking campaign. :)

Excellent photo.  :D  It's hard to say who is the more lifelike.  >:D  And it does make you wonder what statues get up to, after we've all gone to bed.  :-\
