The Netherlands 2017: Johan Cruijff
« on: April 14, 2016, 06:52:05 AM »
Royal Dutch Mint is considering to issue a 5 euro collectors coin to commemorate Johan Cruijff. Managing director René van Dijk of the Royal Dutch Mint said that even the issuance of a 14 euro coin (referring to his shirt number) is being considered, although the coinage act would needed to be changed to be able to issue such coin. Conversations between Royal Dutch Mint and the family and next of kin of Johan Cruijff are still ongoing.

I don't think it's a very good idea to issue a commemorative just after his death...

Ignore the denomination and it makes sense. A commercial commemorative medal is what would have been made in Britain around 1880. John and Jane Public could have decided whether to buy them or not without second thoughts. What is offensive is the denomination. It suggests ideas like "collector", "complete" "investment" and "money" that are false, all the more unbecoming when those suggestions come from a state institution.

As confirmed by the Royal Dutch Mint, this coin won't be issued in 2016. Maybe in 2017, but probably it is just not going to happen.

A few minutes ago the Royal Dutch Mint has announced that the Johan Cruijff coin will be issued this year. It will be a 5 euro coin. The first strike ceremony will be held on September 20, the open day of the Johan Cruijff Foundation. The coin is the first in a series of collectors coins to commemorate well known Dutch sportspeople.

THE HAGUE, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- In the year that Johan Cruyff would have turned 70, the late Dutch soccer legend will be honored with a special 5-euro coin, the Royal Dutch Mint announced on Friday.

On Sept. 20 this year, the ceremonial first coin will be produced in Utrecht.

"The family is honored with the commemorative and that the start will be on this special day for him," said Carole Thate, general manager of the organization World of Johan Cruyff, which coordinates all activities under his name.

Cruyff, or Cruijff as is his official Dutch name, died at the age of 68 on March 24 last year in Barcelona, after he was diagnosed with cancer in October 2015.

Cruyff continued his legacy after his playing career as a coach of Ajax and FC Barcelona.

The Johan Cruyff coin is part of a new series in which historic Dutch sporting icons are remembered.

The coin was designed by Hennie Bouwe. It has a mintage of only 50,000 pieces in UNC quality. The website of the Royal Dutch Mint is currently hard to reach due to the extreme amount of people trying to buy the coin.

Some of the gold Johan Cruijff coins have a denomination of 5 euros, instead of 10 euros. This due to a mistake at the mint. It is not a mule error though as the gold coin is significant smaller than the silver (plated) 5 euro coins. The coins are not yet available to the public and it remains to be seen what will happen to these error coins.

Nobody at the Royal Dutch Mint wanted to comment on the news.

Unbelievable. Foul play by someone at the mint?
