Maldives to introduce redesigned MVR 2 coin
« on: March 17, 2016, 05:27:58 PM »
The Maldives are planning to introduce a redesigned MVR 2 coin later this year, along with the introduction of the new MVR 5 coin. The new MVR 2 coin will also be lighter and smaller. MVR 2 equals to 0.11 euro while MVR 5 equals to 0.29 euro.

The current 2 Rufiyaa coin can be seen below:

Very interesting news.
Current 2 Rufiyaa is a very heavy and big coin by current prevailing standards.

Any more details?
Which mint has been awarded the work?

This is my bet: 2 and 5 rufiyaa bimetallic coins, both coins smaller than the actual 1 rufiyaa coin. Something like that:

Jostein,
Knowing your passion for bimetallics, the odds given by you are understandable.
If the work gets awarded to RAM or South African mint, chances are low.
If RM or RCM gets the work, you may see your wishes fulfilled.
Incidentally, Maldives have never issued any bimetallic coin, circulating or commemorative.

Caution. The low-hanging fruits are still there maybe for a reason.

With parting of Maldives and Commonwealth, the coin appear to have been deferred. Perhaps, the minting by Royal mint was under some bilateral programme.

The Central Bank of Maldives has now cancelled plans to introduce a MVR 5 coin. No information about their plans to redesign the MVR 2 coin has been released.

Maldives Monetary Authority issued a press release to inform the public that the new MVR 2 coins, which are lighter, have arrived at the treasury. No word about when these will be issued or when the design will be released.
