Hi all,

I just wanted to share! I've been collecting coins for 30+ years, and I've always been led to believe that the coins of Edward VIII were rare almost to the point of myth. However, in the post today I received my first.  ;D

Ok, so it's a colonial issue - British West Africa 1/10 penny. I got a George V and Edward VIII, both 1936, same reverse. They cost me the princely sum of £1.80 for the pair, in uncirculated condition. I'm ridiculously pleased.  :D

Happy days.

There are similarly easily available Edward VIII coins from East Africa and New Guinea, though as with the BWA pieces, none of them bear his portrait.

Below an East Africa example (5 cents, with H mintmark for Heaton, Birmingham). The 10 cent piece is very similar. I don't have the New Guinea coin but it is very similar to the George VI version below - it has the monogram ERI instead of GRI and the date 1936 but is otherwise the same.

Thanks FosseWay.

Although the UK coins are indeed extremely rare, as I understand it the colonial coins were produced more quickly because they didn't have to wait for portrait approval.

Thanks for drawing my attention to these other two (they'll be with me before much longer - as you say, readily available). Do you know of any others?

All the best,

The standard circulation coins referring to Edward VIII that I'm aware of are:

BWA 1/10 penny, ½ penny, 1 penny
East Africa 5 cents, 10 cents
New Guinea 1 penny

I can't think of any more but may well have missed some. The BWA and EA ones are available variously with no mintmark, H and KN.

Thank you both. From <k>'s link, also a Fiji penny, which I have just ordered. Some Indian coins too, which may take a little more time to source, but it shouldn't be long before I have a nice little collection of Edward VIII coinage.  :D

Pabitra

British India never issued coin on Edward VIII

There is a coin issued with name of Edward VIII by Kutch, a princely state.

Thanks for the clarification Pabitra. I had scanned through the article fairly quickly and missed that point.  :)
