I use the fourth edition (2003). There is a later edition, because I got this book from a collecting friend who had bought a later version.

Both Gomes and Singh do not pronounce themselves clearly, but implicitly confess to great doubts about the "dredging works" finds. Gomes (i.e. the committee that maintains the book; Gomes is dead) sources its information on Portuguese Asian coins from an unnamed expert, who may well be in Malaysia. You can probably guess better than I why people don't want to speak out against those who bring these on the market. So yes, I think the advice is sound. Stick to stuff you find in Singh or Gomes and you have a better chance of not making rich people even richer and not getting fantasies in your collection.
