Christmas 50p series Isle of Man and Gibraltar
« on: January 09, 2016, 01:24:21 PM »
Just dipping my toe into this forum again as I cannot find an answer anywhere else.
Is the Christmas 50p line discontinued? I can find no info on the 2015 release.

The Christmas 50p line of Isle of Man has been discontinued. The Government of Gibraltar was planning to discontinue their Christmas series too though after complaints of many collectors, they are currently reconsidering their decision.

I have just been informed that the Ministry of Finance of Gibraltar has decided that they will continue the Christmas series, a 2015 dated 50 pence Christmas coin will be issued, though the date of issuance is still unknown.

Good, I like Christmas coins and there isn't a huge selection to collect from.

Prosit do you also have the 8 or so issued by Tonga?  They are on the same size and shape planchet as the IOM and Gibraltar issues.

No I don't but they are on my want list. Maybe sometime this year but most likely after I have all circulation issues that are available from around the world.

You must have a very fine collection with a scope such as yours. Do you often have chances to exhibit your coins?

It certainly isn't the first time that designs of the Christmas series have been recycled, this also happened with the Isle of Man coin of 2008 which was a copy of the IoM Christmas 50p coin of 2003.

In 2016 the Isle of Man will issue a Christmas 50p coin. The piece will be issued within the next few weeks. In 2015 the Government of the Isle of Man did not issue a 50 pence coin. At the time they cut the number of coin issues down to be able to get an overview over the coins that were being issued. The government found it important to have an overview during the tender process.
