India: 2016 Notes - Raghuram Rajan

Although Urjit Patel press release was the first Rs 20 note with Ascending Numbers, looks like we have a Rs 20 note from Raghuram Rajan with Ascending Numbers.

Star notes are not introduced in rs 500 and rs1000 as it is not required.

May be a post for some other time. Essentially the Star series is introduced to solve the whole number problem. In case of Rs 500 notes, if one of the notes gets damaged, in the bundle we would have Rs 500*99 = 49,500. However the requests from Currency chest downstream come in whole numbers. So a request for 50,000 would mean this bundle cannot be used. The way its done is give this incomplete bundle with of Rs 500 with 99 notes and a bundle of Rs 5 of 100 notes.

Like wise for Rs 1000, a bundle [or 2-3 or as many] of Rs 10 would solve the issue.

However for a Rs 100 bundle, if one of the notes goes bad, we have 9900. If we had Rs 1 [I know we reintroduced it recently], but in past a Rs 1 bundle was used. Thus it solved the problem.

Of course there is another logistics / accounting issue that is more easily solvable with a Star notes and hence their introduction. If the volume of printing is up drastically, it makes it easy to have Star notes.

There is a long-standing agreement that the boss of the IMF is a European and the boss of the World Bank an American. It would be good to end that agreement, but will it happen? My guess is Wall Street won't like it and they control the Treasury and the IMF.

That's true, but what I hear is that since EU has UN now, IMF too may not go to EU, to keep the regional balance. Hence very good prospects for Rajan...
