Unrealised design of a 2 euro commemorative coin of the 100th Anniversary of the Tour of Flanders. Belgium submitted the design to the Commission, there was no country in the eurozone that objected to the issuance of this coin. The coin was sheduled to be released in March/April 2013 with a mintage of 2 million pieces. In 2013 Belgium issued a 10 euro collectors coin with a similar design.

According to Jakob Thomsen of the European Commission:

QuoteIt appears that Belgium must have informally informed the Commission of its wish to abandon the planned coin, following which the Commission abstained from publishing the design in the Official Journal of the European Union.

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

Neat scoop, Niels! Thank you.

Peter

Thanks Peter, it was a lot of work to finally get this design. I have been working on this since May last year  :)

What are the real causes of this coin not being released? I don't find anything controversial in the Tour of Flanders...

The Royal Mint of Belgium has decided not to issue the coin. Unlike what other websites are currently reporting, there was no veto from another country. Maybe they realized that they didn't need 2 million new 2 euro coins and  therefore issued a collectors coin instead.

As more and more people shift to electronic money, the demand for coins show a declining trend.
In Belgium, new circulation coins are needed. Even regular coins with new king's effigy have not been released in all denominations for circulation. Only BU set has all 8 denominations. 2 Euro commemoratives of Red Cross was also issued in very limited quantity in end 2014.

But that sounds really strange. They may not need coins, but they keep issuing them, specially the commemorative ones. Isn't it possible that this issue has political connotations of any kind? That year, 2013, Belgium issued the 100th Anniv of the Royal Meteorological Institute on September with 2M mintage...

As Niels said: "I have been working on this since May last year". So, although it is NOW public, you would not have seen it without his efforts. Therefore it's as well to show a little appreciation to such a young and dedicated numismatist. 8)
