Unusual Bird With A Sword Through His Neck
« on: December 08, 2015, 10:42:42 PM »
Hi Group,

I've came across a very interesting and unusual token and am trying to place it in a token category (photographs attached).

Obverse: A bird (hawk?) with a sword through its neck; 5 within a  (football shaped)decorative border below
Reverse: 5 with decorative elements above and below
Metal:     Brass
Diameter: 22mm

After some thought, my impressions are that this this might belong in an 'machine' or a 'military' token category.  I might be totally off in this regard.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks,
John

I am sure it is supposed to be an eagle but reminds me of a chicken

Thanks Dale.

An eagle is a logical selection.  The curved beak may be an indicator that it was meant to represent a bird of prey.  However, the sword through the neck is something that I have not seen before.  That, coupled with the number 5 on both sides along with the decorative elements, I still can't seem to place this is what I call a 'token category'.

I've checked the 'Maverick' tokens on the TokenCatalog.com site and found nothing similar.  I went to Google too and entered the information and nothing.

Still searching.

Thanks,
John

Agreed with Prosit. The design is so clumsy (it is quite possible the sword is not supposed to look like it goes through the chicken's neck), it is more likely to be some private issue, e.g. a bar or dancing.

There is a coin where I have heard it is said the eagle is committing suicide because the sword goes through its neck....now where the heck did I see that....

I like the design clumsy or not. Pretty neat actually.

I will try to remember where I saw something similar.

Maybe it wasn't an eagle on the coin....

I agree.  Determining the type of bird might be difficult with any certainty (unless I can determine where this token came from).  Also, my immediate impression was that the sword was going through the neck.  It's hard to say, but with the bird's head left and the sword facing right in this manner at the neck level it does give the immediate impression of going through the neck.  I guess the bird might have been superimposed over the sword.

The number 5 on both sides would seem to indicate some value at the establishment where this came from.  The bird and sword could be a logo of some type.

I appreciate your thoughts - great discussion.

"""""I guess the bird might have been superimposed over the sword"""""

That was what I thought all along, it just looks like it goes through the neck.

Well it isn't a token, or an eagle and it doesn't go through his neck but darn if he didn't accidentally stick the sword in one eye and out the top of his head  ;)
