Madras Presidency, AR Rupee, Machhlipatan, AH 1(1)79 RY-xx
« on: December 02, 2015, 01:31:00 AM »
This coin has seen significant abuse and I am happy to now give it a good home (until it is passed :) on or stolen >:( ). Although it has suffered numerous test marks, the date can be clearly read as AH 1(1)79; the RY is off-flan, possibly RY-11. More importantly, the mint name can be clearly attributed as Machhlipatan. This remarkable coin is somewhat rare and I have been trying to acquire one for a while.

Machhlipatan (or Masulipatam) was acquired by the French in 1749, but was captured by the British in 1755. Control finally passed to the British in 1766. Thus, this coin dated AH 1179 (1765/66 CE) can be attributed to the British East India Company.

EIC Madras Presidency, ino Alamgir II
AR Rupee

Machhlipatan (Masulipatam)
AH 1(1)79 [1765/66 CE], RY off-flan

Congratulations with your new coin, cmerc. It looks like you are very happy with it, which is more important than how many test marks it has.

Thanks Peter! This coin starts to fill a long-standing gap in my Madras Presidency collection. Also, it doesn't hurt that I got this at 1/16-th of my max bid, i.e., still have some budget left to get other coins.

Trying to add perspective to the Machhlipatan issues over the years.

Although there are several Machhlipatan copper coins posted on this board as well as on zeno, only the following one falls under EIC issues:

Silver EIC issues are much rarer; perhaps others can share their specimens (maybe Vic or repindia have one or more)?

The rest fall under Mughal issues:

Happy to share another gem from the Madras Presidency series, much better than the previous specimen.

EIC Madras Presidency
AR Rupee
AH 1197 RY-2x
Machhlipatan mint
(aka Machilipatam or Masulipatam)
Struck in name of Alamgir II, but AH date matches Shah Alam II

A very nice coin with absolutely clear AH date, mintname, and readable ruler name (Alamgir). If only the second digit of the RY were visible, it would be an ideal specimen.

Congratulations. Very good upgrade. Now, what will you do with the first coin?

Thanks Peter! The first coin stays :) they have different dates anyway (first 1179, second 1197). Besides, can't bring myself to sell it.

Nice coin. I was bidding on this one too but dropped off long back at the price this sold at auctions. I sadly don't have a Rupee of this mint but do have a fraction which I recon is more scarce. I can't find it now but will take a picture when I do. My hunt for the Rupee continues. :)
