I have been trying to identify this coin for over a year now and as yet I have not got very far.

This coin shows a sunface and with a 180° rotation of the other face, I think that parts of "zarb falus.." are readable (+ may be a date ?).
Civic coppers of this type are known for both Iran (Isfahan, Kashan, Resht, Sari...) and Afghanistan (Herat, Qandahar)... could be here Isfahan? difficult to say  ???

This coin of Khoy is of a similar type  (last safavids rulers)

Dear Vic, it seems to me that your coin is of a "lion & sun" type and the one of numismaticroy of a "sunface type" (no lion)...
The oblong shape reminds me Tabriz coins struck in time of the safavid Shah Husayn ???

Thanks for persevering. I think that I am beginning to home into the identification of the coin.

I have looked up on Wikipedia and found the following info about Sultan Husain I

Persian, Civic Copper Ae Falus; Safavid, During Shah Sultan Husain I Reign
Sultan Husayn (also known as Soltan Hosayn and Soltan Hosein), (October 1668 – November 1726) (Persian: شاه سلطان حسین‎‎) reigned 1694–1722; was a Safavid Shah of Iran (Persia). He ruled from 1694 until he was overthrown in 1722 by rebellious marauder Mahmud Hotaki, an Afghan of Pashtun ethnic background.[2] His reign saw the downfall of the Safavid dynasty, which had ruled Persia since the beginning of the 16th century.

Unfortunately Husain's rectangular coins were all silver as far as I know.

Yes, you are right,  rectangular (or oblong) coins with Husain's name are all silver, but some Tabriz coppers struck during his reign are of the same shape, without the ruler's name as it was the rule for civic coopers.
Coins with a bull are often dated 1133 AH  (cf Valentine 109)

That's a very nice coin saro, I'd love one of those to go with my silver :)

These coins are quite lovable. I saw several of them recently, but they usually are in worn condition. The real VF ones must be very rare.

Unfortunately Alan, it isn't my coin, just a picture :'(  I possess one but with worn horns...nevertheless, the mintname is readable . I join its picture / weight 9,38g

I agree with you Paul, these coins are lovable and, like other civic coppers with animal designs, in VF or better condition, they scarce and ....expensive :-[

I suppose coins like these come in large hoards?

saro

Difficult to say, but not very large I think, because even worn, these coins are difficult to find.
