Solomon Islands 1995 FAO 20c
« on: November 07, 2015, 05:02:27 AM »
Does anyone have one? I'm wondering whether coin orientation is normal as every other Solomon Islands 20c I have seen is medal orientation.
Additionally, does anyone know if this coin circulated? I'm thinking it probably came in a set but I can't find any information one way or the other.

These I think were issued quite a bit later than 1995 - I certainly wasn't aware of them until the mid 2000s.    The alignment is opposite to the other Solomon Is coins, they weight is less at 7.7g - and I think the portrait is copied from the royal mint issues (much like the 2c 2006) - see below....

Interesting. Thanks for confirming anyway, and yes, the feel like they're made of something different.

Well, I have catalogued them twenty years ago, right in time for the World Food Day 1995, and they are listed in the book since then. The obverse is of course a bit different since the FAO coins were made at the Italian State Mint. They have been produced for collectors only, not for general circulation.

they didn't appear in the other catalogue for some years.... ::)
but then I guess we should be used to this.

Did the Italian state mint make the 2c 2006 as well?
The portraits are similar....

As we discussed here, the issuance of the 2 cent coins of 2006 hasn't been authorized by the Central Bank of the Solomon Islands and the source of the coins is unknown (most likely China).

Ah thanks - that makes sense.
