‘Simply marvellous’: The 50c coin has never looked this good

RICHIE Benaud attended 28 coin tosses as Australian captain but never with a 50 cent piece like this.

The late Australian cricket legend has been commemorated by the Royal Australian Mint on a special collectable coin released on Thursday, coinciding with the beginning of the third Test match between the Aussies and South Africa at the Adelaide Oval.

Known as the “voice of cricket” because of his work in the commentary box in his post-playing days, Benaud coined several of his own phrases, including his trademark word “marvellous”. And we’re sure you’ll agree that’s the best way to describe this coin.

The coin features Benaud’s portrait surrounded by the atmosphere of a match, including a section of the crowd filled with “The Richies” — the famous supporter group which dresses up as the cricket icon each summer.

“The Royal Australian Mint’s concept for a coin depicting Richie’s life was an idea enthusiastically endorsed by the Benaud family,” said Benaud’s wife, Daphne. “It is a quality product and we are delighted he has been honoured in this way.”

The Mint is producing 95,929 coins after adding up the following statistics from Benaud’s career.

The coin was used in the Test match today but unfortunately Benaud brought no luck for the home side. South African captain Faf du Plessis won the toss and elected to bat.
