Finland has started the trend since 1982. This design from 100 markkaa 1991 was one of my favorites when I bought first SCWC in the late '90s. I still like it, by its simplicity it shows the power of the sport.  Call me traditional but really too bad so many coins were later issued in similar minimalistic style, all the subjects copying each other, where artistic craftsmanship of the medal and coin artists developed through centuries are lost to absurd lines and shapes.

Perhaps this one shouldn't count but I like it.  Mel Wacks counterstruck 1,000 1976 Bicentennial Eisenhower Clad Dollars and gold plated them in recognition of " miracle on ice".  U.S.A. defeating the Soviet Union for the gold medal  in 1980 olympics.

Additional information on Mel Wacks counterstamped coins can be found here.  http://www.amuseum.org/jahf/wacks-counterstamps.html

I wouldn't think the 50c collector coin comes to mind in Canada's case especially when you have several fantastic 25c pieces (in colour too) as well as the loonies like Ottawa Senators, Montreal Canadiens etc etc
