Ghaznavids: Khusraw Malik (1160-1186), Jital, Tye 117.4
« on: August 26, 2015, 10:52:49 PM »
Our francophone colleagues, faced with this coin, came up with:

Ghaznavids: Khusraw Malik (1160-1186) AR Jital (Album-1663; Deyell-116; Tye-117.3) with a question mark. Can we remove the question mark? The legend is read as:

Obv: Text in Nagari, Rajput and bull left.
Revers: Legend in Arabic: Malik / Al-Sultan / al-a'zam / Abu'l-malik / Khusru

Silver, 3.14 grammes and 16 mm. The original thread in french is here.

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

One of our members found this first part of identification thanks to this topic on WoC http://www.worldofcoins.eu/forum/index.php?topic=28411.0 but the reverse is really different. It is probably a jital from the Ghaznavids, but can you precise the period?

Herer are the two reverses in the same direction. It seems that only the last line, and perhaps the first, are similar.

Actually they are the same, but the standard of engraving on both is very poor which accounts for the apparent differences.

The different style is also reflected in the classification of these coins. Both are Tye#117, issued under Khusraw Malik
Yours is subtype Tye#117.4, the other Tye#117.3
