@ Aidan:
A small correction ;)
It's nickel brass and not brass.Nickel brass,as the name implies, contains a small amount of nickel, while brass is an alloy of copper and zinc.

Aditya,
Can you confirm if it is Ni-Br or Al-Br? I was under the information that it is Al-Br.

Amit, the new 5 Rupees is a nickel brass issue.
The metal composition is Copper 75%, Zinc 20% and Nickel 5%

KR,
Thanks for the info.

Has anyone tried this coin with a magnet? I'm not very sure if nickel brass is magnetic or not.Nickel is a very strong magnetic material and its small presence should make nickel brass magnetic (my guess only).I couldn't find my own magnet so wasn't able to check it with my coin ;D

Yes-the latest pathetic issue by India.Mine is struck at Mumbai, but it is also minted at Kolkata mint.Don't know about Noida and Hyderabad mint.
I recently came across a 2009 Hyderabad coin. That leaves Noida. Any one seen it yet?

Amit,

The Hyderabad 5 rupee coin has been around for months now. Its common to even see it in circulation here in Bangalore. I have heard that there will be no Noida issues for the brass coins because Noida is exclusively filling the bi-metallic orders.

I haven't got any Hyderabad or Kolkata struck piece yet.In fact I have got this coin only once in change since it was issued. :-\

That is a bit odd. One of my friends was visiting Mumbai and I asked him not to spend any of the 5 and 2 rupee coins he found in circulation. He spend 2 weeks there and gave me over 20 5 rupee coins. 4 of them were the 2009 brass issue.

These coins are in regular circulation here in Ahmedabad. I get a few every week. I even got a coule at the toll booth recently. However all these coins that I have handled are of Mumbai mint. I got the same Mumbai mint in Delhi some time back. My brother found the 2 Hyderabad coins in coimbatore last week. I have not seen any Kolkatta coins as yet. Can some one please help. If any one needs Mumbai coins, please let me know.

Congratulations, Your perseverance paid off. I swapped Hyderabad for Calcutta with KR sometime ago.

Design is identical to Calcutta. The only extra bit is the mint mark
