I have had Hyderabad mint for a while now and got Calcutta by trading with KR sometimes back. I know about Bombay but haven't seen it in Bangalore. Think it will take time and circulation to find its way down here.

You will find coins struck from all the regular mints in Bangalore. This holds true for coins struck in the 90s.

Aditya,
I have a few of these (Rs 5 Hyderabad mint) for different years (I believe-as I still have to sort them out). Almost all the coins of this type that I have picked up recently have been picked up from Delhi. My helpfull taxi driver (I have been using his services now for over 7 years) has a habit of saving coins. He normally does not return coins that he once picks up. He stores them in a big (2 litre) water bottles. That is the only savings that he manages. He now keeps the change in the glove box of his car till I have gone through them and picked up what I need and only then does he bottle them. This has been a source of a lot of coins at par (except the tip that I pay him) of various mints and types. I have also picked up commemoratives which are hard to find in circulation from him. He has now learnt a bit about coins and specially keeps the commemoratives aside for me. He recently gave me 2 Supreme Court Rs 2 coins that he had saved for me. May his tribe (of helpfull sources for getting coins at par) increase.

(Note : This news is not yet confirmed)

I spoke to the lady in RBI today.(she is currently working in the department which issues the coins.)Yesterday, she was told that government may stop issuing these nickel brass coins,as all the 3 denominations (1,2 and 5 Rupees) are very similar in weight and size, and have created a lot of confusion.

If this happens, these coins soon will become rare ;D

Aidtya,

There is nickel brass in 1 and 2 rupees? Do you any pictures of them?

There are no 1 and 2 rupees coins in nickel brass. But the 3 denominations don't have much difference in weight and the edge of 5 rupees coin is reeded (it was of security type in earlier issues),which makes difficult for blind (or even older people) people to identify the coin correctly. That may be the reason, for this decision. And as I said,it is not yet confirmed.

I can understand if the new 1 and 2 rupee coins are causing confusion especially for blind people. Both are FSS, with a difference of less than 1 gram and 2 mm and a plain edge. Older 2 Rupee coins had the 11 sided edge which was easier to recognize by touch.

I personally don't think the nickel brass 5 rupee should be a problem. It cannot be confused for another coin. Also not all older 5 rupee coins had a security edge although they are not that much in circulation. Another factor is that some of the early 90s 5 rupee coins that are still found in circulation have lost their security edge completely and are almost bald plain. The biggest point of difference for the brass coin is that given its relative higher metal value, the coin weighs less than its predecessors.

Am in Hyderabad and visited a Dealer today. He had a large collections of Error coins. In that I saw Rs 5 coins of many different years of Hyderabad Mint.. However he had almost 50+ error coins of Rs 5 - 1993, Hyderabad. This means that the Rs 5 Cu-Ni coins were regularly minted in Hyderabad and should therefor not be so uncommon. In any case I have told him to get me all coins issued in Hyderabad since 1990. Hope he manages a good collection for me.
