A yellow coin after a bimetallic coin. India's coins are getting colourful. RBI is catching up fast.

Ohh yes-See the transition from Copper-Nickel==>Ferric Stainless Steel==>Nickel Brass 8)..Only problem can be its weight. It is less than it should be..never mind,at least we have a new commemorative :)
I guess production capacity of Indian mints has been increased in last few years-10 Rupees bimetallic is now available with 4 years-2005,2006,2007 and 2008!! (The cross coin)..It is now not so uncommon in market(At-least in Mumbai,In Chennai, they started distributing this coin 2 days ago while in some states,it is not yet released).

So finally a new Nickle - Brass coin, after almost 40 years. The last were the 10 and 20 paisa coins issued in the seventies.

My initial guess is that it will look similar to KM# 291.(Supreme Court of India)..Hopefully the design is not disappointing one like last few issues..

Dear Aditya

Don't hope too much from the design. The description in press release clearly indicates that it will be very much similar to the current Five Rupees Coins( Check the attached Pictures)  except weight and metallic composition.

asm

I tend to agree with Shariq that the coin will be more like the current FSS 5 Rupee coin in size with the design of the older coin (illustrated by Shariq) and in a even cheaper alloy. However with the softer metal (compared to Cu-Ni and FSS), I hope the coins are better struck.

I enjoy the size and weight of the 2000 5 Rupee coin. In regards to the newer version; I'm hoping for the best.

I am sure Frizio would like to help out. Make sure to include a tour of the country as part of his wages.  ;)

Peter,
I beg to differ. Any right minded person would run as far away from the Indian Bureaucracy as possible. These babus (as the officers) are known as, know only how to delay matters. THe 10 Rs Bi-metalics minted in 2006 were held back (God only knows why) for 3 years. Not only that, they had gone ahead with the minting also in 2007 and 2008 (Aditya tells me that he has come across coins of all 3 years). Please check with Frizio if besides the heat and dust, will he have the energy to work with these people?
I agree that India is indeed a beautiful country and any guy would love to come over... but as we say, 'we are like that only' and the developement today is not because of the Government but inspite of it!
Ofcourse after all this, is the government still interested? Will they call for tenders to arrive at a fair payment for the work to be done........(sigh....)Get the cheapest designer......, I do not know what else.
After the tour of the country and possibly collecting a lot of coins, he will need to seek the permission of the babus to take the booty home...

There was an insident a couple of years back, when Mr Vijay Mallya of Kingfisher picked up a rare sword of Tipu Sultan. It was all over the front pages of all leading dailies. When he tried to honestly bring it into the country, he was issued a notice for illigal entry of antiques into the country. When he tried to send it back to his American address, another notice was issued to him for trying to take an antique out of the country (and he had not brought it in as yet. All this while he was an MP (member of Parliament).

Dear Friends
I had modiefied the color of coin's image to try to show the (proposed, it is my guess only) color of new coin. Please check it at
http://www.coinsindia.info/content/new-rupees-5-coinnickel-brass-will-be-circulation-shortly

"First image with yellowish lusture"

Now design(lotus and leaves), serrations and beads will be the same but weight reduced to the 6gms(check wave design)

BC Numismatics

I look forward to seeing some photos of the actual coins.

I have mixed feelings when it comes to Vijay Mallya.Whatever he does is quite appreciable, but his intention is to do some publicity rather than actually preserving our history.
