Peter, Kastenmaennche is using a diminutive for men, thus the coins are "little men in the box".    The magician is not in front of, but in the box, himself a little man in the box producing coins.     On paper notgeld that was a common theme, such as a picture of a tree with money growing on it instead of leaves, the money blowing down into the street, and a street sweeper sweeping it into a pile.    I made a whole collection of it at one coin show, a shoebox of all kinds for sale 15 cents apiece.    Later gave it away to a novice paper money collector, alas before the internet, scanners and WOC.
