Lines or Routes
« on: December 28, 2014, 05:57:45 PM »
In the UK we have "bus routes" and "bus services" - in the US they have "bus lines" - we can use bus lines if we wish - but they are not "British"

Thoughts ?

Personally I wouldn't be be overly picky about which forms of English are used - if there is an American collector of UK transport tokens it will be natural for them to write in their native form of English, and the same the other way round.

That said, for specific words used in specific technical contexts it would seem sensible to use the variant that fits the subject matter. So routes for UK bus services and lines for US ones.

Fosseway's solution is logical, but with an international audience, the less rules the better, I think, as long as everyone easily understands what is meant. Since so far, all the content of WoT is about British tokens, an option may be to write a bot that changes all lines to routes, but that's beyond me.

Similarly, I write transportation just as easily as transport...

For me, transportation involves criminals and Australia...  ;)

OK, I'll change "bus line" into "bus route" where I find any.

But, nevertheless just to confuse things, we have "tram lines" rather than "tram routes" ;)

Maybe that's just a modern expression.

Here is a LT Tramways Map of Routes from Nov. 1933
