Malawi, 1 kwacha, 2006.

Because of increasing inflation, Malawi issued two new denominations in 2006.

These were the 5 and 10 kwacha coins.

They were one-year types only.

Both coins were bimetallic, adding a new tier to the series.

The 5 kwacha coin had a nickel-brass centre within a copper-nickel ring.

It weighed 10.25 grams and was 27 mm in diameter.

The reverse design of the 5 kwacha coin showed fishermen hauling in fish in their nets.

It was designed by Michael Hibbit for the Royal Mint (UK).

The 10 kwacha coin had a nickel-plated steel centre within a nickel-brass ring.

It weighed 15 grams and was 28 mm in diameter.

The reverse design of the 10 kwacha coin featured a tea plantation worker.

It was designed by Michael Hibbit for the Royal Mint (UK).

Malawi, 5 kwacha, 2006.

Collector coin only.

Above is one of a series of silver 5 kwacha coins produced for collectors by the Royal Mint.

The whole series was designed by Michael Hibbit.

Notice how similar the design above looks to that of the regular 5 kwacha coin of 2006.

And in fact, Mr Hibbit did indeed design the 5 and 10 kwacha of 2006.

Malawi issued three new circulation coins in 2012.

They were new versions of the 1, 5 and 10 kwacha coins.

These coins were small and light and made of stainless-steel-plated iron.

Their designs had already been seen on older coins.

The 1 kwacha coin had a diameter of 20 mm.

The 5 and 10 kwacha coins had a diameter of 22 mm.

They were minted through to 2018.

The Royal Mint (UK) produced this new series of coins.

That is not surprising, since one of them is a heptagon.
