Interesting article. And the idea - "Calderon's proposal would reduce the diameter of the 10-, 20-, and 50-centavo coins, while using cheaper metal in other centavos as well as in peso denominations" - sounds basically OK. As mentioned in the text, other countries face similar problems ...

Oh, and I really like this sentence: "Its pretty obvious to just about everyone other than the members of the U.S. Congress that a metal coin has a potential of circulating much longer than will a paper composition bank note of the same denomination." ;D

Here is some more information about the new pieces. The 5 centavos coin is not made any more; the 10c, 20c and 50c look different now:

(20 centavos) http://www.banxico.org.mx/billetesymonedas/infogeneral/fabricActual/Moneda020.html
(50 centavos) http://www.banxico.org.mx/billetesymonedas/infogeneral/fabricActual/Moneda050.html

What is also interesting, I think, is that next year the regular 5 pesos coin will get a couple of companions - circulating $5 commems:

One of the two series celebrates 200 years of Mexican independence (1810) ...

... and the other one commemorates 100 years of the 1910 revolution:

(Edit) I just noticed that most of this info is also available in English. Now I'm too lazy to modify the links above :) but have a look at the English pages about Mexican coinage.
