This I think older - but I can't work out if it's writing or some sort of picture.

I think it's umbrella. Think Burma, Malaysia or North Borneo. Eyes tell me to go to bed now, otherwise, I'd have looked further.

I think it is Greek, obv. diademed head of Zeus (or Poseidon?) left: rotate it about 45 degrees clockwise. As to the reverse, haven't a clue ;D

Best wishes

That was my thinking - It was in a junk lot of princely states coins, and even I can tell it's not Indian.
(Most of these coins I've posted I've bought like that.)

On the back I can pick out what looks like a sword or a staff (the hilt looks a little like a moustache)

I was thinking of a Malay half cent, but it didn't fit. I agree on the classical head. Your description of the reverse helped me see a caduceus.

Looks like Phillip II to me

I think it may be the right facing Poseidon / trident - issue from Syracuse/Sicily, 5th republic, 214-212 BC.

astounding - I think you found it :)

Not helping though that I managed to have both scans upside down :-[

The reverse rotation is nearly OK now but i suppose the obverse should be rotated ca. 90° left.

:)

Excuse my drawing - it's clearer in hand than on the scan.

C 207  5.65-7.25  8  obv. hd l./rev. dolphin on either side of trident, legend on both sides of the shank
C 208  1.61-3.22  7  obv. hd l./rev. dolphin on either side of trident, legend in two rows
C 209  2.22-3.14  5  obv. hd r./rev. legend semicircular

I'm assuming C207/C208 have head left and C209 has head right ?
If not back to the drawing board :)
