Show cases
« on: January 28, 2009, 08:26:04 AM »
Hi there,

Do you know of any show cases to store my euro coins collection?  So far I have been doing that myself, but is getting troublesome, so I was wondering if you guys know of any vendors that sell them.  I am talking about (wooden) cases, with crystal on the top, where one side of the coin can be easily seen.

Thanks in advance,

You should be careful using wooden cases. Some wood is treated with chemicals that will discolour coins. Cheap kinds of wood can react with metal the same way plastic softener does. I had an article on this, but lost it.

My solution would be to get a showcase from Ikea, put in some extra glass shelves and use hard plastic devices shopkeepers use for prices in their shopwindow. I stole pictures of a vertical (easy) and a horizontal (more work) Ikea solution plus a close up that shows how the coins are presented. Both cases are owned by detector pilots.

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.
