The Baltic Crusades and its Numismatic History
« on: June 06, 2014, 03:46:20 AM »
Howdy,

Unlike the crusades in the Levant and Anatolia, the Baltic Crusades has been "forgotten" by the masses.  Heck, most people probably don't even know that an edict was issued to convert the last remaining European lands to Christianity in Lativa, Estonia, and the surrounding lands.  The call was answered by the Denmark Kings and the German principalities.  Unfortunately, I can not find much numismatic literature describing the coins used by the Teutonic Knights and the various Bishoprics that was established.  Can someone recommend one for me?  The Crusader Index is missing that vital section  :)...

Thanks,

Ram

There is a very good catalogue about the coins of the Teutonic Order in Polish language: Monety Zakonu Krzyzackiego by Danuta Miehle from 1998. The pictures are in English ...  ;D
