UK: Royal Mint to open Visitor Centre in 2015
« on: April 25, 2014, 09:22:40 AM »
The Royal Mint in Llantrisant (Wales) plans to open a new Visitor Centre next year. "On its completion in 2015, new shiny doors will officially open The Royal Mint to the general public for the first time in our 1,000 year history!"

The visitor center will open tomorrow and the first people are already waiting outside. While I certainly like the idea of a visitor centre I would have prefered it if they had opened a new Royal Mint Museum (which is closed for quite some years now for safety reasons).. The Royal Mint Visitor Centre shows the different aspects of the mint. It is also possible to mint your own 1 pound coin (which is the last round pound coin). There are some windows with view on the factory. As you can see in the last image, the building looks nothing like the visual in the message above.

There will soon be introduced VIP tours at the Royal Mint where you can apparently actually enter the factory floor and see circulating coins and proof coins being made from upclose. With the Gold plan you are also allowed to enter the Royal Mint Museum.

Yesterday was the first gold tour. The gold tour is only being held once a week with a max. of 8 people. 1,500 people have registered interest for the VIP tours. Unfortunately no further details are known as visitors have to sign a non disclosure agreement  :anger:
