Valentine - Copper coins of India

Instead, Mr. Valentine taught himself to read Indian coins in several scripts and languages and became better than any of the experts in the British museum. Having acquired so much knowledge, he set out to write a book, illustrated by drawings he made himself. Since he was a simple labourer, he didn't know how to issue a book, so he hand-copied the book four times. Later editions were reprints of the hand-written first edition. His book became - and still are - a standard reference for Indian coins. Oesho says some of the coins described in the book have still not been found.

Thank you for short history of W H Valentine, that was needed. I tried searching over the net but didn't found any detail. Even the one i got is handwritten, mesmerized by his beautiful handwriting.

Yes, i found coins of some ruler mentioned in his book like Qutub-ud-din Aibak which are still unknown in numismatic world.

I remembered this thread at the local coin club meeting yesterday, two of W.H Valentine's books came up for auction "Copper coins of India" & "Modern copper coins - Muhammadan states" and I promptly snapped them up! Now what to do with them is another matter altogether . I'm looking forward to doing a little studying. They are the 1971 edition published by Spink and Son Ltd.
Also got a "The coinage of Kutch" by Richard K Bright

Great catch, Joseph. All three books will help you read Indian coins, as both authors have done excellent transliterations. Bright's boolet was issued by Numismatics International, a US coin club. They also did Maldive Islands money by Tim Browder. This is another cheap, but very informative booklet. Warning: once you develop a taste for pre-colonial Indian coins, it will stay with you for life . Have fun with the books.

The one review amused me -

A rather dry book. I was hoping for something more interesting but perhaps I misunderstood what I was ordering. I can't really use it as a gift which is what I had intended.

So it has a rating of two stars - Until I get mine
