Letters representing figures and vice versa on coins
« on: April 21, 2014, 05:18:35 PM »
The struck coins of Hyderabad often feature the number 92 in the loop of the tougher. The explanation in the words of @josephjk: Numeral 92 is observed on almost all coins of Hyderabad. It is not the Reginal year of the state or any king or something related to the rank of Nizam or mint identification. It is the Numerical Value of the name "Muhammad". In Islam Prophet Muhammad is praised and honored, therefore Muslims do not want his name to touched with unclean hands or thrown on the floor. For this reason they represent it with the numerical sum. Muhammad: Mim + Ha + Mim + Dal = 40 + 8 + 40 + 4 = 92.

The "Kapodistrias" series, early coins of the independent Greek republic has AOKA in a cartouche on the coins. In classic Greece, numbers were written with letters, as in the modern Hebrew alphabet (something like A = 1, B = 2 etc.). This was also done on the first modern Greek coins. AOKA means 1821. This is not the year of mintage, but the year in which the Greek rebellion against the Ottoman administration started.
