Strictly speaking, Braille is not a language but a code - after all, somebody who speaks, say, English only could not read a French text written in Braille. But yes, it is still interesting that Braille is used on coins!

One of my friend has informed me that Calcutta mint is also issuing Braille coins now,and they are as common as regular 2 Rupees coins in Calcutta (Kolkata) ::)

But will it be released for circulation? I think it has been issued only in UNC (With issue price of INR 130).

That's the same question I am pondering over. I am thinking now, it would be prudent to buy this coin from the mint rather than risk waiting for a regular issue.

In my opinion, since this issue is a regular circulation issue from other mints, this one too would be a regular issue coin from Hyderabad. The Rs 10 Coin is NCLT even from Mumbai and may not have been planned for regular issue and hence it was an NCLT even from Hyderabad.

Sorry Amit, I dont think Louis Braille was ever issued by Mumbai. I think circulating & UNC & Proof sets were issued by Kolkata. Now Hyderabad is offering UNC. Mumbai is not in picture. Pls correct me if I am wrong...

I never meant Mumbai. May be the plural for mint was the cause of the misunderstanding. Louis Braille was indeed issued only from Cal. mint and the Rs 10 (Guru-ti-Gaddi) only from Mumbai and that too as NCLT.

Just got few pieces of Braille struck at Mumbai mint.Compared to Calcutta issues, the Mumbai issues are far more superior in quality... 8)
I have few pieces only,so I'm not able to offer these to forum members at the moment. However,I might get a bunch in a couple of days.If so,I'll let you know all :)

One more coin to add to the want list......Can you upload a scan?

MS

Bimat

Will attach a scan tomorrow, but the coin clearly shows a diamond near the rim, below the portrait. The coins I have are very shiny-perhaps they are recently struck. And since I got them through my contact in RBI,they are practically 'uncirculated'. :)

I finally managed to get one in circulation. Was picked and saved for me by a family member. Is this coin still scarce or can is it expected to turn up in decent numbers in general circulation?

MS
