Chile: 50 pesos 2008, km219, 5 varieties
« on: January 13, 2014, 04:51:42 PM »
Hi,

I was looking for "Thenot" on Spanish sites on the web, to see why some coins have it and others not.  I didn't get any wiser on that subject, but I found this interesting article, which I have translated into English.

Maybe somebody here would know something about the "Thenot" question? The 10 pesos 2010 comes with and without, that's a fact.

Thanks

Ole

Figleaf helped me spotting the difference.

If we have a look at that article :
http://www.numismatica.cl/50pesos2008.html

We can read that the coin was issued with an error at first, where you could read "Chiie" instead of "Chile". They dismissed the engraving chief and afterwards the Director himself. Once that they fixed this (that is 2nd type), the Chilean Bank refused to show the French engraver Rene Thenot, author of the portrait of B. O´Higgins depicted on the coin. So the 3rd type would not include the initials :

Please note the magnified initials on the left.

Type 4 and 5 are related to the number font types.

I hope that it was understood.

Hi,

René Maurice Thénot Peschard was born in France, as you say, but worked in the Casa de Moneda in Chile from 1937 to 1957. He died in 1963 in Chile. You can read all this and more here:
http://renethenot.blogspot.fr/2007/03/ren-thnot-fue-grabador-de-monedas-y.html
The Chileans consider him part of their own, his son is Chilenean, I don't know about his wife!

When you write Chiie in capital letters you get CHIIE...

Thanks
