Please help attribute this coin. Is this from Murshidabad mint?

Overlord

I think this is a Rupee of Bengal Presidency, Farrukhabad mint, Ry 45 (in the name of Shah Alam II)

Mahesh,
That is a very nice Bengal Presidency silver 1 Rupee coin. The design is in the style of a Moghul coin, but obviously machine-struck.

It could have been struck at Murshidabad,Dhaka,Farrukhabad,Calcutta,Benares or Patna.

Aidan.

Overlord

Thanks Aidan. I checked my old catalog. It lists the possible mints as Farrukhabad and Calcutta for the oblique milling type (1806-1819) and Farrukhabad, Calcutta, Benaras, and Sagar for the Vertical milling (1820-1831) type. From the image I have a feeling that it is the older (1806-1819) type.

The legends are

Obv: Defender of the Muhammadan Faith, Reflection of Divine Excellence, the Emperor Shah Alam has stuck this coin to be current throughout the seven climes.

Rev.: Stuck at Farukhabad in the 45th year of his prosperous reign.

Oesho

The rupee must be of Sagar mint (no mint marks) issue of 1820-1831, vertical milling. Ref.: Pr.325.
(Total silver mintage of Sagar mint = Rs. 5,327,503.)

All, Thank you very much for your help.

Oesho: Isn't the flower on the right side in the middle on the reverse a mint mark?

Oesho

This cinquefoil symbol is not a particular mint mark as it is found on many more coins of different mints. The privy marks which may indicate the mint, are very minute. For that, it is essential to consult the books of Major Fred Pridmore. No reference, nor study of the British Commonwealth series can be done without those essential books.

Problem being that this is by far the most elusive of Pridmore's books. I have been looking for it for decades.

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.
