Muhammad bin Tughluq (AH 725–752; 1325–1351 AD)

Forced Token Currency
Muhammad Bin Tughlaq introduced some beautiful coins during his reign but became infamous for a failed experiment.
This was the introduction of a token currency issue of copper and brass coins.
The Sultan made these token coins legal tender and kept their value the same as gold and silver coins.
He established mints for these coins in several cities.
He launched the coins without taking any precaution against forgery.
The market was soon flooded with fake coins resulting in the Sultan having withdraw all the copper coins.
This caused a huge loss to the royal treasury but the Sultan being an honourable man agreed to exchange the coins back into silver & gold.
Many of these coins can be found today as demonstrated by those on this index.
A number of these are without doubt contemporary forgeries and as such are an important part of Indian numismatics
