Many auctions contain everyday objects that have been owned by the rich & famous and are sold for many times their intrinsic value, if the well known owner has just previously deceased with all the attending tributes and  publicity so much the better.  Buyers are paying for the intangible aura of the "name", and with most of these objects the value actually increases with subsequent sales.

So if a collector has an opportunity to purchase a coin or medal which comes from a well known & esteemed person in the field, be it an author, researcher etc, or even just a famous collector, why not.  I do not think the premium paid  for the intangible aura of the "name" will decrease over time and would probably prove to be a shrewd investment.
