Comments on temples

Given that there is a theme that has "Churches on coins" and "Mosques" on Coins.
I thought I would start one to see if there can be a Theme of "Temples" on coins. If not I can always move this to "One of Kind" :)

See the parent topic: Temples on Coins.

Would this cover Buddhist temples, stupas, Hindu temples, gurudwaras, agiary etc ...essentially non mosque and non-church ?
i can already think of Cambodian coins....there will definitely be many from Thailand, one from Sri Lanka maybe, a couple from Nepal too...

A temple is a temple. 'Thematics' is not an authoritarian board, after all.  ;)

Yeah, i was going to mention quite a few from Latin America... I believe there are a couple from Mexico....but the question is are we talking about temples for religions that still exist ? If yes, that excludes Greek, roman, mayan and the like

A temple is a temple, surely, otherwise we'd end up with a separate thread per culture and time period.  ;D

not so simple....a church is just a christian temple... And in Hindi it is indeed called a mandir ...although people use the word church as well...i would imagine it makes sense to keep Hindu, Buddhist, bahai, Sikh etc (living faiths) in one thread and Greek, mayan, roman, egyptian (dead religions) in another thread... There is a difference Imo  :)

OK, well, I've deleted the ancient Maltese temple, as it's already in the Extinct Civilisations thread.  ;)

Good idea, this thread. As you mentioned, we already have mosques and churches, so why not settle for temples being all other structures being used solely for worshipping? However, you may want to exclude Roman temples on coins. There are so many of those...

Or shall we merge them to form a " Places of worship on coins" thread?

That would be a huge thread! But the members have started separate ones, so I think we should respect their wishes - and their separate traditions.  ;)  It makes the individual subjects easier to find. Large topics such as 'Ships' and 'Music' have long since been split up into subcategories, to make them easier to navigate.
