Akbar 2 dam (TANKA) - my collection
« on: July 22, 2013, 02:10:25 PM »
Akbar issued the heaviest copper coins of India, each weighing about 39 - 41 grams.

These coins were called TANKA or 2 Dam.

These are very rare coins and hardly seen these days.

I am lucky to have 10 such coins.

I will be uploading them for the benefit of the recent research on the Akbar Copper coins.

Awesome conditions these coins are in.. Normally nowadays we get very worn out pieces.. I'm lucky to handle the bairata coin myself and the condition is better in hand.. Only a small correction the month in Ahmedabad tanks is bahman

That's the disadvantage of not knowing how to read Persian. :'( :'( :'(

I have to depend on the coin dealers for reading of the months and mints. I have made the correction to read the month as Bahman. Thanks for pointing this out.

Lovely collection Abhay........it is certainly hard now to come across these coins in these grades at some price which is within reach. Gobindpur, Bairata and Ahmedabad can still be found but the others are well near impossible........

Amitji, find me a Ahmedabad Tanka in good grade and we can talk of availability.. Bairata appears in market sometimes.. Gobindpur lesser.. Ahmedabad has become scarce and Dehli and Agra are impossible.. Zubair khan has seen only one Agra in his life and not a single Dehli.. Rakesh Jain has not seen either a Agra or Dehli in their lifetime.. And I'm talking about people who have handled tons of copper coins. That says about the rarity.

If you read again, you will see that I have mentioned that the prices now are impossible........ only, the three mint issues (and I have not mentioned about condition) can still be encountered.........

Out of the 10 coins that I have, I purchased 9 from an Ebay dealer from south (I don't remember his name now), some 5 year back @ 1900 each. The deal was done outside Ebay, and thus the seller saved on the commission and offered the coins at discounted rates. All the 9 coins are from Bairata mint, with different months.

But after purchasing these coins, even I have rarely seen these Tanka or 2 dams being offered for sale either in Auction Houses or Ebay. I remember that many copper dams were used at the bottom of the heavy copper utensils, just to save the copper utensils from being worn out. It was a very common practice to use brass and copper utensils in India, before stainless steel took over. I still remember going to Kalai Walas for getting the brass utensils polished, with my Grandmother.  Time changes so fast!!!!!

Yes, times do change.. Imagine puting a couple of haridwar dams( worth around say 25,000 rs) under a copper utensils so that the utensil do not wear!!
