It would suggest a poll, but I do not know how to make one.

I put a little history in chapters about Russian banknotes as the first entrance to this side. Needless to say it was lots of work done. I write lines to let my collection speak to people in general, and not only to one of our own kind. Everybody ought to do this in my believe. It makes your collection much more personl and give the autorities something to relay to in case your work is stolen by burglars or other scum. Also your partner or friends then know what you are doing in your spare time...

Certainly not dull, banknotes are. I don't know many people who collect them, but that's another matter. They're sort of sad. Coins have an intrinsic value that remains and on the whole, the more valuable coins of the series remein just that. Banknotes once represented a considerable value and now they're all the same: printed paper with sentimental value only.

However, banknotes have colour and intricate detail. That makes them fun to study. They are larger and older than stamps (but not as old as coins) and they remain visible to the naked eye as you grow older. Like coins, they deteriorate easily, mainly through repeated folding. They are easy to issue, so there are plentyful notes of countries that hardly ever issued coins.

There are emergency banknotes and, just like emergency coins, these are more dynamic, less official. The German inflation notes are a class of collectibles by themselves: often decorated innovatively with local monuments or legends, text in local dialect and funny rhymes.

So what's better to collect? Who cares? The real question is, would you have fun collecting banknotes. If so, what's holding you up?

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.
