I did not have a single Vatican Lire (pre-Euro) coin before getting this set, so happy to add these to the collection. :) Pre-Euro Vatican coins are not as interesting as San Marino Lire coins of the same period (theme or design wise) but they are still interesting. :D I do intend to collect the bimetallic 500 Lire coins but not sure when I'll actually start looking for them so till then I'm happy with these four.

The set has four coins: 20, 50, 100 and 200 Lire; Engraver: Guido Veroi, coin alignment (↑↓) for all the coins.

20 Lire: KM# 144, Aluminum Bronze, 21.25 mm, 3.6 g, Smooth Edge, Mintage: 120,000.

50 Lire: KM# 145, Stainless Steel, 24.8 mm, 6.2 g, Reeded Edge, Mintage: 223,000.

100 Lire: KM# 146, Stainless Steel, 27.75 mm, 8.0 g, Reeded Edge, Mintage: 399,000.

200 Lire: KM# 147, Aluminum Bronze, 24.0 mm, 5.0 g, Reeded Edge, Mintage: 355,000.

Ole,

That's a HUGE collection of Vatican coins compared to mine! ;) I just have these four from pre-euro period, and couple of Euro denominated ones...I'm not a very active collector of Vatican coins so don't have many..

According to Christian belief, those four represent the evangelists. The man or angel refers to Matthew, the lion means Mark, the bull is Luke, and the eagle represents John.

In the days of the lira you used to pick up Vatican (and San Marino) coins fairly frequently in change. This is where most of my Vatican coins came from. Unfortunately they are so varied that the chances of getting more than one of the same type (never mind date) by this method were rather low, especially considering I lived in Italy for one year only. So I don't have any spares either, sorry.

Unlike Bimat, I have no Vatican euro coins, since they seem to be entirely absent from circulation. I also live in a non-euro country so don't get euros in change very often in any case.

If you are able to actually go to Italy (preferably Rome obviously but other tourist hotspots will do), a good way of picking up standard issue Vatican lira coins is to buy the 'sets' touted at the various tourist souvenir stalls. They are of course not official sets and have just been put together by people with a random assortment of Vatican coins, but they tend to be in passable condition and, at least up until my last trip to Italy in 2008, not badly priced.

chrisild

In the lira years, the Vatican was allowed to issue an entire set (seven to eight denominations) with new designs every year. The same applied to San Marino. And with few exceptions, both countries used that opportunity to make money with their money. So people who collected SM and VA "by design" had to buy a new set every year. But those who simply wanted to have one coin from the Vatican could get one without having to spend much.

When the euro cash came, the Vatican initially issued hardly any pieces for circulation. After all, there were plenty of coins from the other euro countries. :) Also, VA could no longer have new circulation coin designs all the time. Nowadays (since 2010) the Vatican is required to issue at least 51% of its regular coins for "normal" circulation. Not every denomination of course (what you find is usually the 50 cent piece), but "entirely absent" seems to apply to Göteborg, not to Rome. ;)

Allowed by whom? Surely the Vatican would have done just what it wanted?

Huh? The Vatican and San Marino had monetary agreements with Italy, similar to what they now have with the European Union. Why do you think did SM not issue any lira coins between 1939 and 1971? ;)

Nessun problema, signor. :)  Don't have those earlier monetary agreements at hand, but the first euro agreement did refer to "bilateral agreements on monetary matters, and in particular the Convenzione monetaria tra la Repubblica Italiana e lo Stato della Città del Vaticano, concluded on 3 December 1991". And of course there were earlier ones; here is one from 1962 for example: http://www.camera.it/_dati/leg04/lavori/stampati/pdf/10450001.pdf

Basically this goes back to the 1929 Lateran Treaties which established the Vatican City State. The Vatican was allowed to issue lira coins with the same specifications that Italy had for its own coins, but had to have its coins minted by the Italian mint (Zecca dello Stato) and had to observe certain issue volume limits. Much of this can still be found in today's EU-VA agreements ...
