TTD book on rare hundi gold coins

By Express News Service - TIRUPATI 31st May 2013 10:52 AM

TTD chairman K Bapiraju on Thursday released a book on 'Gold Coins in Srivari Hundi of Lord Venkateswara' at Dhyan Mandir in New Delhi.

This is the unique book published by TTD during the World Telugu Conference that was held during December last at Tirupati. The book consists of fine pictures and details of gold, silver and copper coins that were offered in the hundi in the temple of Lord Venkateswara in the last few centuries which were carefully preserved by the temple management.

The book consists of pictures of the rare donations ranging from first century AD Roman era coins and that of the Nizam era of 20th century AD dropped in the hundi by anonymous devotees at various points of time. This 397 page book offers detailed description of 1,213 gold coins and research outcome of yesteryear great scholar late Sadu Subramanyam Sastry who brought the importance of the coins to limelight.

The TTD's treasury wing not only pooled up the rare coins, but also formed a committee of numismatists to segregate them period-wise or dynasty-wise for further study. And the details are brought out in the form of a comprehensive and attractive 397-page book.

The book contains pictures of 1,213 gold coins (both faces) and a historical description of its dynasty, mint point etc.

Priced at Rs. 2,000, the TTD authorities believe that the book will certainly make its way into a numismatist's bookshelf.

The book will be released formally by President Pranab Mukherjee during the fourth World Telugu Conference.
