Malayaman: Anonymous ca. 100 AD (MCSI-205)

Obv: Horse standing right; altar in front; Trident side of horse
Rev: Map showing wide river with fishes; rectangular town symbol in left bend; three hills above; ankus + spectre

These coins for me have a very original artistic quality, succesfully coupling both figurative and abstracted elements.

I really like these series, but it is somewhat difficult to get.  Only shows up once in a while in market.  I have been on the lookout for two particular types.  One that has a chola tiger on it and another with a Chera bow.  These two indicates the eventual assimilation of the kingdom into the Cholas and Cheras...

Thanks Mitresh.  It is wonderful you have the Malayaman-Chola and Malayaman-Chera coins as they are quite scarce or even rare!  I have only seen pictures of them in Mitchiner.  I haven't seen them in any market in the past few years, and I have been looking...
