Next month, the Vatican Numismatic Office (UFN) will issue a Phila-Numismatic Cover (PNC) containing a 50c coin dated 2013 showing Pope Francis' portrait and a 70c stamp. Struck at IPZS (Italy) as usual, it can not be had for face value. ;) And if I'm not wrong, this is the first Vatican coin showing Pope Francis' portrait..

At face value for the 10 or so that are on the mailing list so they can sell them for massive amounts of money?

Bimat

It won't be that expensive. ;) It will cost something like €5 or so (not a confirmed number). You will have to pay little more than that if you are buying from a dealer. That's still much higher than the face value though..

Not sure how they'll pull it out since now they're allowed only to have one design per year. Obviously they didn't issue it yet and I believe they won't until next year when whole set will be struck.

The UFN's website lists a "Stamp & Coin Card" dedicated to the beginning of the new pontificate, date of issue 2 May 2013. See here (scroll down to "Inizio del Pontificato di Papa Francesco"). Price €3.90 ... Don't know what it looks like (I do not collect stamps) but the coin will feature Benedict.

Last month for example the Vatican issued a Stamp & Coin Card commemorating the 50th anniversary of the death of John XXIII. The stamp shows John, but the coin is the regular 50 cent circulation piece.

And yes, this year's circulation and "circulation" coins :) all show Benedict. Pope Francis is likely to appear on future 2013 silver/gold collector coins - and on the 2014 regular coins of course.
