Coin shipping experiences

I have sent and received hundreds of coins to and from 40 different countries without any major issue. Some shipments took close to 2 months, for example Africa to South America.
The key is how to prepare the package, and I always include a note for customs stating that the coins have no commercial value and are intended for collecting purposes only.

I have lost a few items over the years but mainly the mail is reliable although it is terribly slow at present due to Covid 19 and is taking around two months to get downunder.

I got this a couple of days ago and I blame the sniffer dog!

I noticed this today when leaving feedback for other items, one I had bought on 19 Apr, 2020 and the expected delivery date is Sun 9th Aug, so another couple of months yet before I see it and there is no delivery on weekends anyway.

If it is any comfort, my daughter has in her stamp collection an enveloppe mailed in early 1940 that was received back as undeliverable 6 years later. Everything is relative.

I received two letters today. Both the letters were dispatched from Germany in the first week of March before lockdown was announced in India (I believe Germany was already under lockdown then). The letters arrived in India almost two months later, were again stuck in New Delhi for a month. One of the letter finally reached the local post office last week but was then again stuck there as hardly a few postmen are reporting to work (local trains are still not running in Mumbai). I went to post office today with the tracking codes and collected both the letters - was pleased to see all the coins safe and sound! There was a very nice Greek €10 silver proof collector coin (Battle of Salamis) and also the complete set of German €5 polymer ring coins of 2019.

I am still waiting for one more letter which was also dispatched from Germany but it somehow reached Milan, Italy. It has been redirected to Mumbai but not arrived here yet. I have already lodged a complaint with India Post.

There is a story how I got these two letters delivered - since there was no movement of the letters after they reached India, I reached out to India Post's social media team on Twitter with tracking codes, they were very helpful and end result is now visible. Commendable job!

No, that came in mid-March, roughly 15 to 20 depending on what you look at. But at least in this state, going or driving to a post office has always been possible; we did not have stay-at-home rules or specified hours. But heck, in those days we did learn to be flexible and patient ...

Last month I wanted to send a package to a friend in the US, and the DHL guy at the post office told me that this was no longer allowed due to modified US regulations. Huh? Anyway, I had to pay more than €50 for an "International Premium" package (right, that was postage, not the value of what was inside). For some obscure reason, that was allowed. Took only two weeks until the recipient got it.

I haven't done a lot of shipping outside the US, but what I've done...Siberia, Australia, UK, Ireland, Norway...have gotten to where they were supposed to go. On the other hand, I've had many, many coins sent to me from the UK and Ireland. and a few from Spain. While a bit slow at times, especially now, I've eventually received everything with only one exception. Several years ago a coin coming from the UK disappeared  somewhere and never wandered into my neighborhood. It wasn't tracked so I'm not sure what happened to it. Although a nice coin, the eBay seller refunded my money promptly so it ended well. Being the eternal optimist that I am, I still expect it to arrive any day now. I'm sure it will be here tomorrow.

One thing that I noticed was that items coming from the UK generally take about ten days...five or six to enter the country and about four more being driven around the country by the US Postal Service. On the other hand, items coming from Ireland take about half the time. I suppose the difference has to do with the regulations or practices of each country's postal system. In any case, as long as I receive everything, I'm happy.
