I have a hobby coin website and I have had it since March of 2003.

http://www.austriancoins.com/

I recieved an inquiry about weather I would consider selling it.  No formal money offer just an inquiry and of course have I no idea if it is legit or what. But it has started me to thinking.

I am a little emotionaly invested in it but realistically I haven't played an active role in its maintanence (other than paying for it) or upgraded the information in quite a few years. I have moved on a bit and it isn't as good a fit as it use to be.

It is about Austrian coins tokens and medals and while I enjoyed exploring that field for many years, and still collect the Prosit Neujahr medals and still have an active interest in the coins, I can't recall the last time I bought an Austrian medal or coin. I bet it was a Euro coin though which is poorly represented there.

On the one hand getting rid of it might be liberating and free me to do a different one if I chose. On the other hand I lose an old friend.

Any one sold a site before? Are they worth anything? Any comments, opinions or observations are welcome.

I think you could get quite a pretty penny for that domain name. For people who google "Austrian coins", "coins of Austria", "coins from Austria", "coins + Austria". Your site would come up among the first 5 or ten hits I'd imagine. And given its simple ".com" website, it has extremely easy and high recall value.
If you haven't updated in years, you should consider divesting from it, unless you realistically see yourself working on it again in the near future.

You should find out how much ".com" domain names go for. And negotiate. Especially if its a commercial prospective.

I'm afraid I don't know about buying and selling domain names. You'll have to google this.  :)

Hi,

Check out godaddy.com  They have a section on selling names so that might help. Given the name you have for your site there is money involved for sure. A carefully chosen name.

Thanks for the comments! When I chose the name I considered it for weeks.  I actually thought the official Austrian Mint website should have snatched it but they didn't/hadn't. It has decent traffic for a hobby site, it does list high in search engines and is a simple name to remember. The offer appears to be from a commercial enterprise.

Likely can't get an 1804 US dollar out of it  ;) But might be interesting to see what they are worth.

Thanks for the comments!  The last time I updated the site was 2008 I am a little ashamed to say.  The idea of updateing it now isn't very attractive and I consider that to be a major chore although I could improve it a lot. While I should have more free time now I actually have less. Things change.

Godaddy Appraisls says it is worth between $87 and $600 US depending on how I enter it.

Well the bottom line value is $600 but at least you have a ballpark figure. to the right group it could be worth significantly more i think.

Prosit

Yeah that is good information to know.  However $600 isn't really siginificant but isn't coffee money either. I had no idea.

I was offered $250 USD which I refused (although maybe I shouldn't have) and then offered an amount to put a link on my site which I will consider.  I have refused all previous paid link requests.

Very educational experience.

well, there is nothing to stop you selling this domain and setting up a new one....

www.austrianprosit.com is free :)
always willing to trade modern UK coins for modern coins from elsewhere....

Prosit

That is a good name and I like it but while the content of a site named austriancoins.com is self evident solely by the name...intutive...the content of www.austrianprosit.com  is not. A slight difference and maybe not important. I could sell it and not set up another. That would be liberating too  :D

The person that offered to buy the site and/or rent advertizing is not answering emails. So I won't be getting rid of it any time soon. I was a fraid it might not be a reputable offer.

So now I need to get off my backside and update it  :) Just need to find time.
