Has anyone seen this 1 rupee 8 anna currency note?
« on: April 14, 2013, 11:14:27 AM »
Currently, a note of 1 Rupee 8 Anna is listed as SPECIMEN note from British India.

http://www.ebay.in/itm/230956468681?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2648#ht_500wt_1156

I have never heard about this note.

Any comments??

It is not listed in the first edition of South Asian Coins and Paper Money perhaps someone can check the new edition, recently published.

I'll repeat the image here as it is actually a Specimen print on a large sheet of paper.

It is always interesting to see what else the seller has, in this case there is another note described as...

PORTUGESE INDIA VERY RARE "SPECIMEN NOTE" FIVE RUPEES CINCO RUPIAS

This is quite interesting. I've never seen a 1 Rupee 8 Anna note and will try and research it.  I know it has the word SPECIMEN printed on it, but I think these fall into the category of "Proofs, Patterns and Color Trials" where banknotes are concerned. They are typically used for design or color trials and you see them printed uniface on a larger paper. SPECIMEN notes on the other hand are notes that are issued to the bank and are printed on the actual paper with both sides - they are the same as the actual notes with zeros as the serial number,  but are not legal tender and cannot be exchanged in the bank.  These were sent to the bank as official copies of the actual notes. The Portuguese India note is a SPECIMEN note.  KGV British India specimen notes have SPECIMEN stamp (rubber stamp) on them and have a very low serial number.

I expected to find it in this collection that was sold in Australia recently, Indian Banknote collection to be sold. but its not listed.

The link there still works and the entire collection can be viewed with the prices realised.

Hello

I am very new to this and was searching for some information on some paper money I have come across in my late parent’s attic.

Has anyone seen this 1 rupee 8 anna currency note?

I have tried the usual suspect such as ebay and a local coin shop but this particular note is a mystery to me and all my limited research online.

When the tag line, “Has anyone seen this 1 rupee 8 anna currency note?”, came up, it pointed me to you, so I registered and bingo the same note is on my desk but with something else of interest.

It is, or was in an envelope marked ‘Allahabad Bank Limited’ – ‘Lucknow’

The front of the envelope is address to my late father at No.1 Napier Road, Cantonment, Lucknow

At a guess it must have been in the late 1920’s or 1930’s when he was in Lucknow, we are front the old Raj and the family was from India and what is now Pakistan for some three generations until the 1960’s when we all came back to England.

Firstly can anyone throw some light on this particular note and maybe some others I have found in the same box along with some military medals and paperwork etc... Etc...

Any advice or help would be welcomed

Thanks

Geoffrey

Hello Geoffery!

There were no notes of 1 Rupee 8 Annas issued for circulation, however there are SPECIMENs reported.  They are extremely rare and quite valuable. If you are based near London, I would strongly suggest to contact Spink & Sons https://www.spink.com/ - they will be able to tell you if your note is authentic.

The value of the note will depend on the condition the note is in, so please do handle it with care.  Folds, wear, and graffiti on the note will generally decrease its value.

Eventually a 2 Rupee 8 Anna note was printed and used in circulation but these were not popular / practical and they were eventually withdrawn. Today these are also actively sought after buy collectors.

If you can post pictures here that would be great.

Once you upload it somewhere on the web, grab the URL of the image.  Using that, when you post, enclose it like the following:

{img}http://www.whatever.com/images/mypic.jpg{/img}

but replace the curly braces {} with square braces []
