Monaco 2013: 20th Anniversary of UN Membership
« on: April 12, 2013, 06:04:26 AM »
In 1993 (thus, 20 years ago), the Principality of Monaco became a member of the United Nations, with full voting rights. Monaco is likely to issue a commemorative €2 coin on this occasion.

Further details are not available yet, may be soon... :)

It would rather be very nice if they issue so many coins! I wonder if ECB will allow such a huge mintage for such a tiny country? Let's wait and watch! 8)

The ECB controls the total issue volumes, not single mintages. :)  I read about that 1 million mintage too, but in a collector's blog, not in any official source so far. ("Pour éviter au maximum la spéculation et pour que la pièce circule librement dans toute la zone euro, il est prévu une frappe à hauteur de 1 million d'exemplaires.") So speculation is to be avoided (ha ...); we will see.

Theoretically such a volume is possible, according to the monetary agreement: The fixed part of the annual "ceiling" is 2,340,000 euro; the variable part is the French issue volume per person multiplied by the number of people living in Monaco. There is also an option to increase that volume for a commem, but only if the volume in the year before and/or after is lower ...

A 2 euro coin was just issued in the Netherlands with a mintage of 2 million. There's not a trace of it in circulation. Even a mintage of 1 million will not prevent funny pricing, I suppose.

The 2011 coin 2 euro Erasmus from the Netherlands has a mintage of 2 million coins.
Just around 200.000 did go to the dealers. The other coins were put into circulation.
This is the reason why these unc coins are more expensive.

According to Official Journal of Monaco, Monaco will indeed issue 1,249, 131 pieces of €2 commemorative this year :o They haven't confirmed the theme though.

By the way, that blue and white maple leaf sign does not refer to Canada, and it won't be on the actual coins. ;)  That is Gadoury's company logo ...

The design reminds me of Finnish €2 commemorative of 2005..

By the way, there will be 10,000 proof pieces of this commemorative too, exclusively for rich collectors. :D

The map is taken from the UN logo. And of course the peace dove is a strong symbol by itself, but also the logo of the UN's International Day of Peace ...

I'll be glad to get one, but will not need a proof piece. ;)  As far as I know, the proof version can be purchased now; the regular coin comes later this year. Could even be Nov/Dec, we will see.

Thank you for the comparison, Bimat. Good fun to see the creative design of puzzle pieces on the Finnish coin and the logo on the Monegask coin. I am sure you can guess which design I prefer...

This is actually the third euro coin depicting a dove. 2005 Finland was the first, but do you know the second? ;)
